For 3GPP Release 8 only supports single layer beamforming,3GPP has proposed to support dual layer beamforming in LTE-Advanced systems to meet the demand for higher transmission rate.Compared with the single layer beamforming, the dual layer beamforming employs dual layer transmission and MU-MIMO techniques, which can improve the SNR of received signal, decrease interferences between many users, and increase the spectral efficiency of the systems. We first explain the eigen-beamforming in detail, and then discuss the design of DRS after giving an overview of standardization progress of the dual layer beamforming, and finally simulate three transmission cases. The simulation results demonstrate that the dual layer beamforming can meet the communication system's demand.
